Doctor
Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya was established on 18th July 1946 by the
eminent scholar, educationist, and famous lawer Sir Dr. Harisingh Gour.
He donated most his life-time savings worth Rs. Two Crores for the establishment
of this temple of higher learning in the educationally and economically
very backward region of Bundelkhand at Sagar. At that time, this was the 18th
University of India and now it is oldest and the biggest University of
Madhya Pradesh. The University may be regarded as the unique example of
contribution made by a single person.
Dr.
Gour had a dream to set up a centre of higher learning at the rural background
of Sagar with the aim of developing it to attain academic excellence at
par with pioneering universities of India as well as Oxford and Cambridge
Universities. He had a vision to develop this University as a premier
educational centre in the field of teaching and research. He had a very
rich experience of the University system as he had

already served as the founder Vice-Chancellor of University
of Delhi and University of Nagpur. Apart from being a great educationist,
Dr. Gour was a great patriot and philanthropist, eminent jurist, noble
literary man who made significant and memorable creative contribution,
well recognised by the legal and literary world.
The University
of Saugar was rechristened as Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February
1983 by the State Legislature. The University has now attained the position
of a fully developed institution imparting higher education and has earned
its name and fame for its contribution in the field of teaching and research
in the country. The University is situated 5 km. east of Sagar City and
its campus is spread on 830.3 hectares on the finest picturesque hill top.
It has presently 42 university teaching departments working under 10
faculties.

Every
year, about 4000 students are seeking admissions in various undergraduate
and post-graduate courses, being run by these university teaching
departments at Sagar. In addition to this, there are about 110 affiliated
colleges, covering six revenue districts of M.P. The University
has many huge and attractive buildings with excellent basic amenities,
accommodating the teaching departments. There are four hostels for boys
and one hostel for girls in the University campus. Well equipped
University Medical Centre, University Press, State Bank of India
branch, Post Office, Employment and Guidance Bureau, Canteens and
other auxiliary services are also available in the University Campus.

The
University Central Library is the biggest library in the State, having more
than three lacs of books and more than 100 research journals and periodicals
being subscribed. About 26 teaching departments are also maintaining
their own departmental library. Among the University teaching departments,
many of them have made significant contributions and have achieved excellence.
They have been well recognised nationally and internationally particularly,
the Department of Geology, Pharmacy, Criminology and Forensic Science,
Botany, Anthropology, Geography, Micro Biology and Bio-technology, Ancient
Indian History & Archaeology, Business Management and Computer Science
and Application have innovative teaching programmes and are attracting
a large number of students form all parts of the country. The Institute
of Distance Education of the University is conducting a good number of
modern, conventional and job oriented courses on correspondence basis.
Every year more than 600 students are seeking admissions in these courses
from all over the country.

Besides these teaching departments, the University has a centre
of IGNOU, AVRC, Central Instrumentation Laboratory, Shrimant B.S.
Jain Centre for Research and Education, Population Research Centre
(set up by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India),
Muktibodh Peeth (created by M.P. Government) NCC and NSS wings,
Botanical Garden, Archaeological Museum, etc. It is worth mentioning
that the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
Banglore has awarded Four Star Status to this University after
taking into consideration its academic achievements and performance.
